WHAT IS STFSL?
Formed in 2006 to promote affordable senior housing and other services for senior citizens in the Sacandaga Valley, the Sacandaga Task Force for Senior Living is an independent group of citizens interested in serving seniors in our area. We are a grassroots effort dedicated to community enhancement and the well-being of our Adirondack society.
Our first goal, housing, was met in 2020 with the completion of construction of an 8-unit apartment complex on S. 1st St. in Northville. This was accomplished in partnership with Fulton County Community Heritage Corp. For more details and photos click Senior Housing on the menu at the left.
Our second goal of bringing services to the seniors in our area is an ongoing effort and can be seen by clicking Senior Services at the left.
STFSL is a New York Not-for-Profit Corporation and is classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) public charity. Contributions, including membership dues, are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
PURPOSES (the legal stuff)
The following are the purposes for which the Organization has been organized: 1) To establish and provide affordable housing for senior citizens and senior Living facilities for the general welfare and benefit of the public, including but not Limited to purchasing and owning real estate; providing services in connection with the management, maintenance and repair of any such housing; providing other services that may be necessary in connection with establishing housing and facilities for senior citizens. 2) To attract or develop senior services that will help seniors who wish to remain in their own homes.
The public or quasi-public objective to be served under Section 201 (b) of the New York Not-for-Profit Corporation Law by each business activity undertaken pursuant to this section is specifically to provide affordable housing for senior citizens who meet certain financial guidelines. By providing this service the corporation will lessen the dependency of these individuals on the government for financial assistance for housing. Nothing herein shall authorize this corporation, directly or indirectly, to engage in or include among its purposes any of the activities mentioned in Not-for-Profit Corporation Law Section 404 (b) through (v).
In furtherance of its corporate purposes, the corporation shall have all general powers enumerated in Section 202 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law, together with the powers to solicit grants and contributions for corporate purposes.
WHAT REGION DOES THE TASK FORCE ADDRESS? (the real stuff}
The focus of STFSL is the Sacandaga Valley centering on the hamlet of Northville in the Town of Northampton, located within the Adirondack State Park of upstate New York. Northville, with approximately 1,200 year-round residents, is located on the 29-mile long Great Sacandaga Lake which was formed in 1929/30 with the construction of the Conglingville Dam on the Sacandaga River and the resulting inundation of the river valley. As formerly named, the Sacandaga Reservoir was created to help control spring flooding along the upper Hudson River and to relieve salt water incursion into the the lower Hudson. Though man-made, the popularity of the Sacandaga as a tourist attraction and eventual place for retirement, continues to grow.
Like many of the neighboring small communities, Northville/Northampton had recently seen an influx of residents in their retirement, adding to a local population of aging residents. Their need for services was imminent. The regional communities included in our study were: Benson, Bleecker, Broadalbin, Day, Edinburg, Hadley, Hope, Mayfield, Northampton, Northville, Providence and Wells, all lying within the counties of Fulton, Saratoga and Hamilton.
