Task Force Announces: Construction has begun for Sacandaga Apartments
3Sept 11,2019
The Sacandaga Task Force for Senior Living is pleased to announce that, after 12 plus years of effort, the goal of affordable senior citizen housing in the Village of Northville is about to be realized. The STFSL was formed in 2006 to promote affordable senior housing and other services for senior citizens in the Sacandaga Valley. Through Task Force efforts, a number of services including a weekly congregate meal site, informational programming and transportation assistance, have been made available to area seniors. In 2014, after years of fundraising and searching for an appropriate building site, the STFSL obtained financing and purchased the property at 302 S. First Street in the Village of Northville.
In 2019 STFSL made the property available to the Fulton County Community Heritage Corporation (FCCHC) who applied for and was awarded a grant/deferred loan for $1,284,920 under the NYS Local HOME Program, Small Rental Development Initiative for the construction of a single-story building hat will contain eight one-bedroom apartments for occupancy by low and moderate income senior citizens aged 62 and older.
In August of 2018, FCCHC signed a contract with the Housing Trust Fund Corporation for the development of the project. On July 25, 2019, FCCHC completed acquisition of the North First Street property from STFSL. FCCHC contracted with the PIKE Company, Inc. for construction of the project. Construction to began in October 2019, with completion scheduled for spring of 2020. FCCHC will publically announce application procedures for potential occupants at a later date.
“ It has been a long road and we owe a debt of gratitude to past and current members of the Sacandaga Task Force for their assistance and perseverance and we would like to recognize and thank the local residents and the local elected and appointed officials who provided valuable input and support for the project. We believe the project will be a beneficial addition to the community and the Sacandaga Valley Region.” Said James Conkling, STFSL President

During the late sumemer and early fall of 2019 all of the basic site work was completed. Water and sewer connections were laid out and the main slab was poured. It didn't seem like much progress was being made but there was much preparation that had to go on before building construction could begin.
Below is a somewhat pictorial documentation as the project unfolded.
Materials have been delivered and walls and roof are going up. The shell is taking shape.
